Students in the
Semiconductor Process Technology Course
Students from Dutchess Community College's
Semiconductor Process Technology course (ELT 211)
were the first to benefit from a new partnership
with the School of Nano Sciences and Engineering (SNAE)
& UAlbany Institute for Materials (UAIM) at
SUNY Albany. Students toured the
Nanotechnology facility and each was given a
300mm wafer and a bunny suit for use in the
Center's 300mm cleanroom research facilities to
gain hands-on experiences on lithography masking
& patterning, oxide etching, and metal
deposition. The laboratory exercise
were designed to enforce students' classroom
lectures. Students also were given demos on
Focused Ion Beam (FIB) technique and Scanning
Electron Microscope (SEM). These techniques
allow students to appreciate the size of small
features on the patterned wafers. It was a
great learning experience for everyone.
Thanks are due to the following
faculty and staff at the University of Albany: Dr.
James Castracane, Dr. Eric Eisnbraum, Dr. Di Wu,
Dr. Eric Lifshin, Dr. Kathleen Dunn, Dr. Natalya
Tokranova, Dr. Bai Xu, Dr. Kaushik Kumar, Mr.
Bruce Altemus and Mr. Jobert VanEisden for their
support for the hands-on exercises. A
special thanks go to Ms. Jacqueline DiStefano,
Director of Operations at SNAE, for coordinating
the tour and training exercise. The
instructor for the course, Dr. William Ma, is to
be thanked for developing this course and, in
conjunction with lab assistant Mr. Paul Melzer,
actively seeking relevant hands-on experiences for
the students. Last but not least, thanks
also go to Dr. Leah Akins, Chair of Electrical
Engineering Technology Program at DCC, for her
support and coordinating the course at DCC as well
as for driving the DCC van to Albany and back for
the Saturday workshop.
